The Dancer’s Project I

The Dancer’s Project I led by choreographer /dancer Ana Sanchez-Colberg is a practical one week intensive focussing on the process of the dancer in and into performance. Dancers will explore how changes to the way choreography is made today demand new skills beyond being able to make and execute ‘technique’. Through practical tasks we will explore how this change affects the way dancers approach technique training: how do dancers enter into a choreographic process? How do dancers navigate from performing with high technical skills to understanding the aesthetic aims of a performance? how does this challenge ideas of ‘presence’ and ‘performing the moment’?
The project will begin with a weekend intensive introducing new approaches to technical training that are based on exploring the fullness of the ‘body’ in performance. The approach is based on key principles of Jooss/Wigman technique, the approach behind the work of innovative choreographers/dancers like Susanne Linke, Reinhild Hoffmann, Pina Bausch and William Forsythe. The project then moves on to a week of two-hour daily session in which we will work on tasks that focus on issues of ‘presence’, articulation of clarity in performance, issues of focus, dynamic range and spatial awareness, as well as tasks that introduce dancers to the challenges of devised choreographic performance. The project will finish with an ‘open studio’ presentation for visitors to come and share the processes of the project.

The workshop will be led be choreographer/dancer Ana Sánchez-Colberg, artistic director of award-winning UK based Theatre enCorps, that since 1989 has been pioneering artistic research into the little explored area of the dancer in contemporary performance. Ana has led similar dancer’s projects internationally including Tanzwochen Wien and Impulstanz Vienna, Danshogskolan Stockholm, Cultural House in Puerto Rico, the Edinburgh Festival, International Festival of Theatre in Bogota, Columbia, Casa de la Cultura in Mexico, Pfefferberg Kunsthaus Berlin and most recently for USA professional choreographers at the Baryshnikov Dance Studio in White Oaks. Ana trained in classical ballet before turning to contemporary dance. She trained with Hellmut Gottschild (assistant to Mary Wigman in Berlin) and then with Isa Partsch-Berghson, and Lucas Hoving as part of her Ph D at Laban Centre London. Apart for her work with Theatre enCorps, Ana has created new works for Circus in collaboration with the Circus Department at DHS Stockholm, movement direction for Rouge 28 Theatre Company in the UK and the Trinity Opera Group, and new choreographies for Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, Andanza (PR), Foreign Bodies (UK) and Ballets des Staattheaters Kottbus (DE). Her worked has been performed in important stages all over the world including Teatro Colon, Colombia, Fine Arts Centre in Puerto Rico, the Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts in Washington DC, and the Wuppertal Opera House in Germany, amongst others.
